Pfizer's early data shows that the vaccine is more than 90% effective
The analysis found that the vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in preventing the disease among experimental volunteers who had no evidence of a previous infection of the coronavirus, the company said. If the results continue, this level of protection will put it on an equal footing with highly effective childhood vaccines against diseases such as measles. No serious safety concerns were noted, the company said.
Pfizer plans to ask the Food and Drug Administration for emergency permission for a two-dose vaccine later this month, after collecting recommended safety data for two months. By the end of the year, enough doses would have been made to immunize between 15 and 20 million people, according to the company's executives.
